STARCON 2011 NEWS

As STARCON weekend approaches all the folks involved are excited about the many different preparations we are making for your enjoyment. We, the staff and volunteers, have all been to different conventions over the years. So we’ve gotten a feel for what fans of science fiction and comics like and what maybe hasn’t worked so well.
With that in mind, we’ve altered our format slightly, taking out the gold and silver packages for attendees. We did this because, with the interest we are receiving from Science Fiction shows in the Vancouver area, a convention of 400 attendees wasn’t going to be big enough. So, we’ve enlisted two hotels near Vancouver International Airport, in the city of Richmond, B.C to host the convention. They are the Airport Sheraton and the Airport Hilton. Each hotel has a free shuttle service that runs between the airport and the hotels. We are also working on the Mariott as the hotel that will house the vendors room. The Sheraton, the biggest hotel, will be the main convention hotel. The Hilton will be used for additional panels that will run at the same time as panels in the main hotel.

Tickets:
Admission to the convention is the same price for everyone. Where we differ from other conventions is in the ticket price per event. We’ve noticed that in some of the larger conventions, there is one admission price, then there is a mad scramble by attendees to get into the more popular panels. As well, some attendees have taken up front row seats in panels they are not interested in, so that they can be in the front row to attend their preferred panel. This is not fair to people who have come to the convention to see their favorite actors, only to find the best seats already taken by those who are not fans of that show. To avoid this, we are charging for tickets to each panel. Don’t worry, the prices for the tickets are very reasonable. As well, the tickets will be numbered. The sooner you buy a ticket to the panel you want to see, the better your seat.

Events:
Join us for a Meet and Greet on Friday evening with some of your favorite actors.
Watch for ourSci-fi Costume Contest, our Charity Auction to benefit Sanctuary For Kids and our Sci-Fi Party. Several celebrities have talents other than acting. We expect to enjoy a jam session and comedy from some very talented people. All this will happen on Saturday night.
If you think you might like to learn how to get started as an actor, Peter Flemming and Frank Cassini will be holding a discussion about what you need to know to make it as an actor.
Virginia Hey will be offering her ever popular Meditation Workshop on Sunday morning.
There will be other classes and workshops offered as well as Q&A panels and autograph sessions. Look for the classes to be held on Sunday.
Pierre Bernard Jr. of the Conan show will be on hand to draw images of fans for charity.
We have decided not to offer photo ops this year. We will consider photo ops for next year if there is a demand for them.

Feel free to ask questions or leave comments on our Questions and Comments page. We will do our best to answer them.
